Introduction to Impromptu Speaking
Impromptu is a public speaking event where students have seven minutes to select a topic, brainstorm their ideas, outline and deliver a speech. The speech is given with or without notes and uses an introduction, body, and conclusion. The speech can be light-hearted or serious. It can be based upon prompts that range from nursery rhymes, current events, celebrities, organizations, and more.
HOW TO DO AN IMPROMPTU SPEECH
1. Select your topic
2. 2 minutes to prepare your speech. You will not have time to write out your speech word for word. But you do have time to write a quick outline of notes for your speech. Your speech should have: (a) an introduction, (b) body - recommended 2-3 points, (c) conclusion.
3. 4-5 minutes to deliver your speech
4. That's all! :)
Sample Impromptu Speech
Please note this is a national champion speaker in the Final Round of the National Championships! So do not feel pressured to be like Alex! But it is a great model of how an "impromptu speech" can be so effective. Notice at the beginning of the video he picks up three topics in front of the judges and chooses "Susan B. Anthony" by telling the judges what topic he has picked. The camera stops at the 30 second mark to allow Alex 2 minutes to prepare his speech (the video does not show him preparing during these 2 minutes) and then at the 35 second mark the camera resumes filming for his actual speech.
