Today’s Debate Shout Out goes to the Binghamton University Speech and Debate Team.
The Binghamton Speech and Debate Team have always been champions. Consistently ranked in the top 10 in the nation by the Cross-Cross-Examination Debate Association (CEDA). Ranked as the 1st Place top program in 2008. The team has qualified to the National Debate Tournament (NDT) nearly every year.
But they are also champions of the community. The Team has partnered with local schools and students while schools have shut down to keep education going through speech and debate! The Team is hosting a series of debate workshops for 3rd through 8th graders in Broome County. Participants are paired with member of the BU Debate Team who will educate them on the topic, speech and debate skills and prepare them to argue both sides of the topic. Director of Speech and Debate Joe Schatz says they’ve been doing this in person in schools all year.
“In person we’ve done topics everything from like, books are better than movies, Mickey Mouse is better than Donald Duck. But we’ve also done more serious topics like we should have universal health care or we should have universal basic income. And one of the things that we’ve found is that the kids are actually really excited to debate some political and economic issues as opposed to just sort of lighter, fun topics,” says Schatz. Schatz asks parents to register ahead of time due to high demand at debate.binghamton.edu. - https://www.binghamtonhomepage.com/local-news-2/binghamton-universitys-online-debate-program-keeps-kids-learning-while-school-is-out/
